A daily briefing for media sellers

The agents showed up everywhere this week

not as a forecast but as workflow. IAB Europe found 58% of ad execs expect agentic buying to hit scale within a year, with the real split inside that number: 86% at companies over 500 staff already run agentic systems where people and agents plan and execute together, versus 48% below 500. Time plugged Kana AI agents into its ad sales operation, IAB Tech Lab shipped AAMP 3.0 to standardise the RFP-to-buy process, and OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads crossed a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days. What worries the people being automated is not whether AI gets used but who steers it: security ranked as the top concern, privacy second.

The interface changed under publishers' feet

Meta's Muse launched September 8 and hit 730,000 U.S. downloads in five days, outpacing ChatGPT and Claude, then Amazon blocked it from shopping its store within two weeks. Brian Morrissey's read is the sharpest: the "connection economy" is a barbell, human community on one end and agentic concierges on the other, and publishers cannot do what Amazon did. The Guardian's Anna Bateson framed it plainly, that "our website may become something that is more of a service to agentic audiences rather than where you have the majority of human traffic." Publishers who bank on sleepers, those un-used subscriptions quietly auto-renewing, should be nervous: cancelling them is one of Muse's early use cases.

The pipes got prised open, sort of

Publishers gave Google's antitrust remedies a firm 5 out of 10, welcoming the opening of AdX to rival ad servers while noting the demand side stays untouched. Meanwhile the link economy broke on the numbers: U.S. web traffic to the top 100 news sites fell from 70 million visits in 2024 to 48 million in July, direct traffic sank 25%, and Cloudflare says 52% of crawler requests are now AI training. The remedies fix plumbing; the traffic collapse is a different problem the remedies cannot touch.

What this means for publishers

Agent-readable inventory is now a distribution prerequisite, not an optimisation. With AI buying platforms projected to manage 27% of U.S. ad spend by 2030 and AAMP 3.0 standardising the RFP-to-buy flow, publishers who cannot be found and bought by an agent drop off the plan entirely.

The interface shift means the durable asset is the direct relationship. The Guardian's entitlement model and Time's ads-inside-markdown both point the same way: get paid when your journalism surfaces inside someone else's agent, not just on your own page.

Google's remedies are a yield story with a long fuse. Opening AdX to rival servers is real, but with no GAM share target and publishers bearing the migration risk, near-term revenue impact is modest, so do not re-platform on this alone.

Personalization is only worth the engineering if it converts. The signal from Miami is that matching content to a reader is table stakes; the money is in using it to price and pace the free-to-paid funnel.

Creator equity is a talent-retention and distribution play for publishers too. The 0.1% to 3% seed benchmarks give a defensible range for bringing a high-reach creator onto your own cap table or advisory board instead of renting their audience per post.

On the Radar

Meta Connect 2026 lands this week, and any Muse monetisation announcement, whether ads, a merchant toll, or neither, resets the agentic-interface conversation.

AAMP 3.0's OpenProposal is open for public comment through October 22, the first real standard for how a seller agent answers a brief, worth a look for any publisher revenue team.

Google remedies implementation details and the first tests of AdWords demand flowing through rival ad servers will show whether the 5/10 scorecard moves.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads expansion beyond Free and Go, the question of ads creeping into paid tiers and Business, is the next platform battle to watch for supply access.

Whether the WarnerMount close triggers a fresh round of streaming inventory consolidation, and what that does to CPMs heading into Q4 upfronts.
