Amazon blocks Meta's Muse, turning agent access into an ad decision

Amazon has cut off Meta's Muse personal AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com, extending a fight it had been running against Perplexity to one of its largest technology partners. Per GeekWire, Amazon says Meta never told it Muse would access the store, the agent does not identify itself when it browses, and it appears to capture and store customer credentials. John Ebbert's Tipsheet frames what is left unsaid: this behaviour threatens Amazon's high-margin advertising business, running at an annualised $70 billion as of Q1 2026. The mechanics are specific: an agent can move from a request straight to a recommendation or purchase without showing Amazon's sponsored listings, the sale can leave Amazon when Muse compares prices with rival stores, and attribution gets murkier when an agent hits several services before buying. Adweek reports Amazon expects outside agents to operate transparently, let merchants opt out, and provide a "mutual value exchange", which suggests agent access will ultimately be settled on commercial terms rather than technical compliance.
The crux
Whether an AI agent gets to walk a retailer's or platform's aisles is becoming a commercial and advertising decision, not a technical one, and Amazon is drawing the first line to defend its $70 billion ad business.

This is the template for what is about to hit publisher content. Agents will crawl, summarise and act on your content whether you like it or not; the question is whether you lock the door and lose distribution, or open it and get attribution, referral and payment rails in return.
