A daily briefing for media sellers

The agent layer is being claimed

Amazon put ChatGPT inventory inside its DSP this week, and OpenAI shipped an Ads Manager plugin that moves campaign set-up, management and analysis into the agent itself. The walled gardens are no longer just selling inventory, they are racing to own the logic that decides where ad dollars go. Publishers are watching this from the outside, which is the uncomfortable part.

The open web's counterweight is being repriced

The Trade Desk is worth a tenth of its late-2024 peak and is being dropped from the S&P 500 on 21 September, days after a 15% layoff. Challenger DSPs like Viant and Pontiac are picking off CTV budgets while a startup like Tuple argues the "see everything in the bidstream" model is now just bloat. The independent programmatic stack that publishers leaned on against Google and Amazon is losing altitude.

The rules are being rewritten, not the ownership

Judge Brinkema let Google keep DFP and AdX, but handed publishers behavioural levers, including higher floors and auction-data sharing. The FTC, meanwhile, is suing Amazon over an alleged shadow bidder that inflated auction prices. Two of the biggest ad platforms are being told, in different courts, that the way they run auctions is the problem.

Publishers are restructuring for what is left

USA Today is building a new audience and digital production team and cutting staff, The New York Times has a new role for AI and off-platform discovery, and FAST operators cannot get platforms to hand over the data that would prove their inventory. The rented traffic and the unverified supply are both getting repriced at once.

What this means for publishers

The conversational ad surface is real demand, but it is routed through Amazon and OpenAI, so publishers should treat ChatGPT and agent inventory as a distribution question, not just a new buyer to chase.

The auction remedies (higher floors, data sharing) are the first chance in years to test Google's pricing power; publishers should prepare to use them rather than wait.

FAST and home screen inventory are being discounted for lack of verification; publishers with clean, independently measurable supply will capture the CPM premium.

The agency fee squeeze and retail media consolidation point the same way: publishers need first-party data and direct advertiser relationships to avoid being a price-taker in someone else's stack.

Ghost creators raise the value of verified, branded content; publishers should sell trust and provenance harder, not compete on volume.
