SPUR publishes an AI content tracking standard

The Standards for Publisher Usage Rights coalition (the Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, AP, Sky, The Times of London) released its content telemetry standard v1.0 for tracking when publisher content is retrieved, grounded, cited or engaged by AI tools, and invited OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta and Microsoft to an invitation-only advisory board of about 20 members. Technical lead Alex Springer concedes OpenAI "did not comment" on the standard, but retrieval and grounding events are already starting to appear in Google and Microsoft systems, so the standard's value is in getting all of them to align on one.

The crux

Publishers are building the measurement layer for AI usage of their content, so licensing negotiations can be based on data rather than guesswork.

Sell-side read

A credible telemetry standard turns "your AI used my content" from an assertion into a billable, auditable event. Publishers should track the first technical committee meeting on Oct 15, which will define auditing and evidencing.
