GEO turns from experiment into a business

Generative engine optimization (GEO) has moved from experiment to revenue line, with Future reporting more than 30 GEO clients and renewals, Ziff Davis running multiple clients, and at least a half-dozen large publishers (Future, Time, Ziff Davis, plus German houses Hubert Burda Media, Funke and Klambt) selling AI-visibility services to brands.

The crux

Publishers are monetising their AI visibility directly, selling brands placement in the markdown files and answer sources that AI agents actually read.

Sell-side read

GEO is the first genuinely new publisher revenue stream of the AI era, and it leans on editorial authority plus audience data rather than programmatic pipes. It is also premium-priced and early, so margin and defensibility are still open questions.

Watch

The Interactive Advertising Bureau's AI measurement framework due in November, which would solve the attribution gap that is the current ceiling on GEO budgets.
