Google's AI payouts to publishers underwhelm
MediaPost · 30 Sep 2026, 23:08 CEST · Score: 9
Google is piloting an "AI Contribution" programme paying roughly 100 publishers based on how much their content contributes to AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini. Early payouts are modest, The Information reports: many under $1,000, one tester at $50,000 to $60,000, another at more than $1 million a year, which for small and mid-size publishers is less than 0.1% of advertising revenue. Forbes chief innovation officer Nina Gould says publishers have come to terms with search sending fewer referrals: "When you chop off that funnel and the firehose, that first click from Google, it takes a lot of the audience, but leaves you with those who are loyal."
The crux
Google's flagship olive branch pays real money to a few but is rounding error for most, doing little to replace the search traffic AI Overviews have diverted.
Sell-side read
Treat these payouts as a negotiation floor, not a revenue line. Publishers with strong AI-citation share now have a concrete (if thin) price anchor to push licensing conversations.
