PubMatic jumps on show-level CTV targeting

PubMatic announced Thursday that contextual targeting at the episode level is available to buyers accessing streaming TV inventory through its SSP, via a collaboration with AI contextual-data firm Silverpush. The problem it solves is messy metadata: PubMatic's VP of customer success Abbie Reichner notes some content owners label the first episode of a season "S1E1" while others write "Sea1 Ep1." WPP's Jay O'Brien says buyers are "finally getting to a place" where they can buy CTV against context, and WPP saw 20% higher conversion on a contextual CTV campaign versus benchmarks. Silverpush's Jeff Rich argues "you can learn a lot more about a person by understanding what they're watching, as opposed to tracking their IP address."
The crux
Show-level and episode-level contextual data is the scarce, high-value signal in CTV right now, and the platforms that normalise it first will capture the budget shift that media planners have long said is waiting on better program-level transparency.
Sell-side read
CTV publishers who clean and standardise their content metadata unlock context-based demand and premium, and can stop defaulting to third-party audience segments that tell a buyer nothing about what a viewer is actually watching.
Watch
How quickly rival SSPs ship episode-level contextual data, and whether Gracenote-style content IDs become the de facto standard publishers are asked to expose.
