Tim Armstrong: agents do not watch ads

Flowcode CEO Tim Armstrong, who built Google's ad sales operation and later ran AOL and Yahoo, sees the industry bifurcating into two poles: AI-driven, service-based advertising on one side, and plugging into human life on the other, with the click economy in between facing the most disruption. Armstrong arrived at Cannes having run Claude sub-agents through his entire Paris itinerary, and argues brands are underinvesting in the physical world that agents cannot touch. "Agents don't have any empathy. They haven't seen your ad. They don't know how you plug into the real world," he said. "As a brand, in that agent economy, you're going to have to compete by stuffing value and stuffing information into my agent so my agent chooses you." He called real life "a thousand times more important" as agents take over digital.
The crux
In an agent-mediated economy, advertising becomes a service an agent recommends rather than a message a user sees - so brands, and the publishers whose content feeds those agents, must optimize for being the agent's chosen source, not for the click.
Sell-side read
Your contextual content and structured data are the raw material agents will cite, so position your coverage as the "value" agents surface; where you hold real-world assets, cross-sell physical and out-of-home as the human-life counterweight.
