Ad tech tucks in: Taboola grabs Dianomi, Infillion takes Foursquare

Two acquisitions announced Friday mark the next phase of ad tech consolidation, and both are about owning differentiated signals rather than building another generic SSP. Taboola offered between £19 million and £27 million for Dianomi, the UK native ad network that sits inside Reuters, the Wall Street Journal, CNN Business and The Times with financial advertisers like Charles Schwab and Bank of America. It plugs Dianomi's premium finance supply into Taboola's Realize performance platform. "Together with Dianomi, we will be able to offer an even larger, highly curated, trusted network of publishers," Taboola CEO Adam Singolda said. Infillion, meanwhile, agreed to acquire Foursquare, folding 100 million points of interest across 200 countries into a stack that already includes MediaMath, Catalina and location firms Gimbal and Placed. The logic is attribution, per Infillion's Rob Emrich: "Walled gardens and retailer apps can only measure what happens inside their own environments." As Tipsheet puts it, the assets differ but the strategy is the same: own the data and relationships that make a broader platform worth more. The tell that this is a trend, not a coincidence, is the same-week rebrand of SSP 33Across into WealthStage, a platform built purely for financial-services advertisers.

The crux

Programmatic has commoditised generic supply so thoroughly that vertical specialisation and proprietary data are now the only defensible moats, and the acquirers are racing to assemble them.

Sell-side read

For publishers, this is a demand-side signal about where budgets are concentrating; finance, location and commerce data command premium CPMs, and publishers with differentiated vertical audiences are the supply these platforms are buying.

Watch

Emrich's promise that Infillion will remain an "active acquirer," and Singolda's "stay tuned for more" on LinkedIn, both point to more tuck-ins before year end.
