Retail media confronts its 'grading your own homework' problem

Retail media has spent years multiplying; now the industry has to prove it actually sells something. "Most of our conversations are centered around proof," said Chris Riedy, chief revenue officer of Ibotta, on a Beet.TV panel with Catherine Berger of Bimbo Bakeries and Katie Daleo, general manager of CPG ads at DoorDash. The panel framed the prize as the more than $200 billion in annual US consumer packaged goods trade spend converging with retail media, converting promotions from "a murky expense into something measurable." Riedy's line on the state of play: "We're past that kind of the Kool-Aid phase." The differentiator he and others now push is verified transactions over statistical models - through a partner like DoorDash, tracking units actually sold rather than modeling what may have happened.

The crux

Retail media's growth narrative now collides with a demand for verifiable, transaction-level proof, and the networks that can only offer modeled estimates will lose budget to those that can count units sold.

Sell-side read

Publishers and commerce-media players that can close the loop to verified sales - not panel-based estimates - hold the negotiation edge with CPG brands. If your measurement is a model, expect to be squeezed on CPMs.

Watch

Whether third-party verification (beyond the retailers' own reporting) becomes a standard requirement in 2027 RMN RFPs.
