Google tests pay-per-value AI licensing for publishers
Tipsheet · 15 Sep 2026, 11:15 CEST · Score: 9
Google is running a Search Console-based pilot that pays a small number of publishers when their content "significantly" contributes to AI Overviews, Gemini and AI Mode answers, as first reported by Digiday.
The crux
This is the first acknowledgement that AI answers depend on publisher content even when they return no visit, but it is far from a durable compensation model.
Sell-side read
Do not budget on it yet, but structure content and crawling so you are eligible, and watch whether Microsoft, Cloudflare, TollBit and the IAB Tech Lab CoMP protocol force Google toward transparent pricing.
Watch
Whether the pilot expands beyond a handful of publishers and publishes clear eligibility and pricing.
