Microsoft's Xbox Patent Signals In-Game Ads Are Finally Coming

A recent Xbox patent filing, viewed by Business Insider, describes ads inserted at natural breaks in gameplay, after a player finishes a level for example, plus the option to watch an ad in exchange for a stretch of ad-free play. Microsoft has spent years trying to force ads onto gamers and already has the data and infrastructure to run them; Business Insider reported in July that Xbox was testing reward-based advertising. The blocker, AdExchanger notes, has never been technical, it is that gamers greet advertising with open hostility, and rewarded video at natural interruptions is the compromise. The same roundup flags the influencer land grab among AI companies: Perplexity is hiring a new exec to run its creator program, while Google and Microsoft are reportedly offering deals worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to influencers to humanise their AI products.

The crux

In-game advertising is shifting from "will they" to "how," with the natural-break reward mechanic the first credible design for forcing ads into gaming without torching the player relationship, and a new premium video inventory pool hangs on whether gamers accept it.

Sell-side read

Gaming and CTV-style in-game inventory is one of the few genuinely new supply pools on the horizon, and a publisher or network with premium gaming audiences should be watching Microsoft's mechanics closely because rewarded, natural-break insertion is the template that will define the category's economics.
