Profound's $180M Round Cements GEO As A Real Budget Line

AI search platform Profound has raised a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins, barely seven months after a $96 million Series C valued it at $1 billion. The company is expanding beyond measuring brands' visibility in AI answers: its AI Marketer product can, with approval, create, publish and evaluate marketing using company and individual context. Co-founder and CEO James Cadwallader framed the shift on LinkedIn: "The agent is now the customer. It scans hundreds of thousands of sources to form an opinion of your brand... Winning in AI Search means being everywhere, all at once. It's an inhuman amount of work, and the only way to do it is with agents." Profound says more than 2,500 brands, including a third of the Fortune 100, use the platform.
The crux
The money moving into generative engine optimization is signalling that "AI visibility" is consolidating from a measurement dashboard into an execution category, and the companies that win will own the loop between detecting a citation gap and fixing it, not just the report.
Sell-side read
This is the mirror image of the DPS story: publishers sit at the supply end of the citation economy these agents are built to manipulate, which means content that AI engines can and do cite is becoming an asset class, and publishers who do not optimise for citation are leaving that value to the Profounds of the world.
Watch
Whether Profound and rivals start buying or licensing publisher content directly to feed their agents, which would put a price on the very citation supply publishers are now giving away in opaque deals.
