OpenAI Pitches ChatGPT as a Marketing OS
Tipsheet · 9 Sep 2026, 11:15 CEST · Score: 10
OpenAI is repositioning ChatGPT from an ad surface into the layer where marketing decisions get made and executed. In a webinar on ChatGPT Work for Marketing Teams, OpenAI's VP of Monetization Benji Shomair described the arc as moving "from reporting on campaigns to making decisions to taking action," and used OpenAI's own marketing team as the case study for how ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT Ads operate together in practice. Tipsheet's editorial read is blunt: "Is this the beginning of OpenAI absorbing functions now spread across martech and ad tech tools?" The same newsletter notes that advertisers are simultaneously asking for more visibility into what happens inside ChatGPT when their ads run, including prompt-matching and brand-safety controls, a sign that OpenAI is building a full marketing stack while the transparency questions remain unresolved.
The crux
OpenAI is signalling it wants to own the decisioning layer of marketing, not just sell ad inventory, and if it succeeds the agency and ad tech tool stack that publishers and brands monetise through becomes a feature inside someone else's operating system.
Sell-side read
If ChatGPT becomes the system that routes spend from insight to action, publishers risk becoming a supply endpoint inside OpenAI's marketing OS, with the same loss of negotiating leverage the Google remedies fight is about. The counter is first-party data and direct advertiser relationships that make a publisher impossible to bypass.
Watch
Whether OpenAI opens ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT Ads to third-party agents, and how fast it moves from reporting toward automated buying, the point at which publisher yield starts being negotiated by a machine.
