Ads inside AI: a new media channel matures fast
Beet.TV · 7 Sep 2026, 22:02 CEST · Score: 8
The advertising industry has spent years using AI to optimise what it already does; now AI itself is becoming ad inventory. OpenAI's ChatGPT ads hit a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers buying across more than 40 countries, Beet.TV reports. "Imagine being in the early days of the Google ads, Facebook ads, TikTok ads," said Andrea Tortella, chief executive of Thrad. "You have this net new supply, new ad real estate that is being monetized." Emarketer forecasts U.S. AI ad spending reaching $68.25 billion by 2030, but notes more than 80% of 2026 spending will sit adjacent to AI-generated content, like Google AI Overviews, rather than inside chatbots. Standalone chatbot ad spend is expected to hit $0.96 billion in 2026, up more than 1,600% year on year. Tortella's bet is contextual: "the future of the cookie is actually context."
The crux
The first act of AI in advertising was better tools; the second act, starting now, is ad supply inside the LLM itself, and the near-term addressable volume is in AI-adjacent surfaces rather than pure chatbot chat.
Sell-side read
Publishers with strong contextual signals and structured content are the natural suppliers for the AI-adjacent inventory that will carry most of the forecast spend, since context is what fills the gap cookies are leaving.
Watch
whether the ChatGPT $1 billion run rate extends beyond search-style placements into publisher-partnered AI surfaces, and how fast the 1,600% chatbot figure composes into a meaningful total.
