Media Agencies Build Audit Tools to Stop AI Agents Overcharging
Digiday · 4 Sep 2026, 06:01 CEST · Score: 10
Agencies deploying agentic AI for planning and buying are discovering the savings evaporate if the agents run unchecked, so they are building audit layers. Gartner estimates 60% of organisations using AI will face cost overruns from lack of usage tracking, and 56% are implementing AI without clear usage policies. Performance agency Rise, part of Quad, is testing AI buying agents with a supermarket client using PubMatic's audit log to detect when agents "drift" outside preset parameters. "Any change [the agent] makes in any environment is time-stamped", said PubMatic's Harry Tong. Dept is taking a prescriptive route with an "AI gateway" that removes staffers' model choice after "some people burn through 1.5 million tokens in a day", per global EVP of technology Jonathan Whiteside, who added: "Every deliverable has an accountable human... You are still accountable whether AI did it or if it was done by a junior."
The crux
Agentic advertising only delivers its promised efficiency if the industry builds financial controls, model routing and audit trails around it, and agencies are now realising the accountability problem is the product problem.
Sell-side read
Expect an explosion of token-cost and agent-governance tooling on the buy side; publishers should watch whether agentic demand starts favouring inventory that fits standardised, auditable workflows (GAM-native, MCP-compatible).
Watch
Whether audit-log capabilities spread from agencies into DSP and SSP products as table stakes, and whether agentic media buying shifts spend toward fully automated, standard-compliant publisher inventory.
