ChatGPT Ads Hit a $1 Billion Run Rate, But Measurement Holds It Back

OpenAI announced its ads business has reached a $1 billion annualized run rate, excluding the ad credits it has been issuing to advertisers. It is still far short of earlier projections of $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year and $100 billion by 2030. AdExchanger canvassed advertisers and the message is consistent: better measurement and standardisation would unlock more spend. Rajeev Nair, co-founder and chief product officer of measurement platform Lifesight, called the platform "very rudimentary" on conversion tracking and audience options, while Victor Batista, senior director of paid media at Jellyfish, said advertisers "will start to more deeply weigh the ROI of the activity against its perceived value" as the channel matures. Mile Marker's Monica Shukla said clients still see "value in being early... before the space gets commoditized".
The crux
The AI-native ad channel has passed its demonstration stage in revenue terms but remains in "test budgets" for most advertisers because it cannot yet prove incrementality, the same accountability gap every new channel has had to close.
Sell-side read
ChatGPT-class inventory is competing for the same performance budgets as your open web inventory; publishers that can prove incrementality and work with third-party measurement tools are better positioned than those relying on platform self-reporting.
Watch
OpenAI's roadmap on third-party MMM and incrementality API integrations, which Lifesight's Nair says needs about six months to model cross-channel lift, so a meaningful budget shift is a H1 2027 question.
