CNN International is building for an agentic ad market that barely exists

CNN International is still on track to sell its first ad through an AI agent in the first quarter of 2027, seven months after announcing the plan, even though the market it is building for does not yet exist. "I gave a Q1 timeline to have the first dollars flowing, which I would still be hopeful for," said Faisal Karmali, vice president of digital operations for CNN International Commercial and sister company Warner Bros. Discovery. The network is pairing in-house agent infrastructure with third-party vendors and demand-side platforms, while navigating two competing agent standards that overlap on 13 functions and no agreed way to stop agents gaming the system. Karmali framed the prize as control: "We know we have a clean environment with human-made fact-check content that has a clean metadata layer that we can ensure gets packaged in the correct way." But the scepticism is sharp too. Ravi Patel, chief executive of ad tech startup SWYM, told Digiday seller agents "automate the deal, not the delivery", adding that performance is still decided impression by impression and "otherwise you've automated the paperwork, not the performance". Karmali himself would not say agents could tip power back toward publishers, calling it "too early to say", and suggested agent-led deals could start at 5% of CNN International's ad business or one day reach 50%. The agent work sits alongside a broader diversification push: CNN International, like many of its counterparts, has spent years spreading its journalists across new outlets and following the data on where it pays, with each tested against audience numbers before the network commits. Its FAST channels now run in 50 countries, the CNN All Access subscription went live in the UK and Canada on 20 October, and its editorially-led Global Perspectives events series has staged four sponsor-funded gatherings in its first year, a business Karmali calls "almost the antithesis of agentic".

The crux

The agentic sell-side is being built on spec by publishers before buyer demand exists, on the bet that machine-readable, clean provenance lets a publisher command pricing power it has ceded to programmatic intermediaries, with no evidence yet that the dollars will follow.

Sell-side read

CNN's bet is a template worth copying selectively: invest in a clean metadata layer and agent-readable inventory descriptions now, cheaply, so you are not left out of the loop if agentic buying scales, but do not yet price it into revenue.

Watch

Whether CNN International actually lands a first agent-sold dollar by Q1 2027, and whether the AAMP-versus-AdCP protocol standoff resolves or hardens into two incompatible stacks.
