Salesforce buys Braze for $5.66bn to accelerate "agentic marketing"

Salesforce is paying $5.66 billion in enterprise value, or $47.50 a share in cash, for the AI-powered customer engagement platform Braze, a deal it says will strengthen Marketing Cloud's cross-channel personalisation and bring "real-time engagement and AI decisioning" into its Customer 360 stack. Braze, which counts Canva, Instacart and Urban Outfitters among roughly 2,770 customers, is expected to close into Salesforce in the company's fiscal year 2028. "Every interaction is an opportunity to wow your customers... Most of that wow comes from knowing your customer, and responding at just the right moment," said Patrick Stokes, Salesforce's president of applications and marketing. Salesforce frames the deal in explicitly agentic terms: "AI is raising the bar for marketers, who now need agentic solutions that can understand customers, make decisions, and act in real time." Braze chief executive Bill Magnuson, in his own statement, called marketers "a brand's ultimate competitive advantage". Whether that buy-side automation translates into better publisher economics remains to be seen.
The crux
A $5.66bn martech acquisition is a signal that the buy-side is consolidating around AI decisioning now, which raises the bar for publishers and ad tech vendors to explain how their inventory and data plug into an agent-driven marketing workflow.
Sell-side read
When the biggest buyer of marketing software bets on agents that decide in real time, the sell-side implication is agent-readability: your inventory, audience data and pricing need to be machine-interpretable or they will be skipped by the very automation now being funded at this scale.
Watch
Whether Salesforce's fiscal-2028 close triggers a wave of follow-on CEP/CDP consolidation, and whether publisher-side data clean rooms and identity vendors get pulled into the same consolidation.
