LG and Magnite put agentic buying on the home screen, with a human still on the kill switch

LG Ad Solutions and Magnite announced Wednesday that LG smart TV home screen inventory is now available to agencies through agentic AI buying, with the Northern California Toyota Dealers Association as the first campaign, bought through indie agency H/L and starring 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Under the hood, H/L's buyer agent negotiated with Magnite's seller agent inside ClearLine via Model Context Protocol, the "AI plumbing layer" that lets agents transact across systems. Crucially, the agent-led media plan was still approved by humans at LG and H/L before it went live. Jeremy Cobb, VP at H/L, called home screen ads "table stakes" for capturing attention before viewers disappear into a show or a second screen, and said agentic buying is "the next evolutionary step in the buying process" but "not something that's going to fundamentally change what we're doing." Mike Laband, group SVP of revenue at Magnite, framed it as speed and efficiency on top of the existing SpringServe and ClearLine stack. Cobb tempered the agentic framing too: the Toyota campaign was an upper-funnel branding play, not performance, and he said "the standard marketing funnel is dead," so the success metric is cost per reach and awareness rather than direct response.
The crux
Agentic buying has crossed from conference demo to a real, human-approved campaign on premium CTV inventory, but the pitch is workflow speed, not a change in the underlying economics of how that inventory is priced.
Sell-side read
The MCP-based seller-agent pattern is the one to watch for the supply side: if publishers can expose inventory to buyer agents through open protocols, they can capture direct, agent-negotiated deals without surrendering to a reseller, but only if the human approval gate stays in place to protect floor pricing.
Watch
Whether agentic deals clear at, above, or below the CPM conventional buyers would pay for the same home screen inventory, and whether Magnite's ClearLine seller agent expands beyond CTV.
