Skydance's scale lands in a stagnant TV ad market

MediaPost reported Skydance is projected to hold 21% of US television advertising, topping Disney and Comcast, and 28% of the national TV ad market, per Madison & Wall estimates, but with $80 billion of debt from a $111 billion merger and a TV ad market that is not growing. MediaPost's analyst round-up reported concerns about what that scale delivers for brands, with TransUnion's Julie Clark asking "what all that reach delivers". AdExchanger reported Warner Bros. Discovery published a white paper comparing five video measurement providers across more than 50 campaigns, as buyers and sellers keep pressing for measurement standards.

The crux

Consolidation has delivered real negotiating scale in national TV, but it lands in a market where streaming ad revenue is mostly replacing linear revenue rather than adding to it.

Sell-side read

A larger national TV group improves inventory leverage in the upfront market, but the debt load means content and sports spending will be under pressure, which ripples into the price of premium inventory.
